Jacobs International Teen Leadership Institute

Created in 2000, the Institute realizes the vision of its founders to create a program dedicated to the education and leadership development of young people in the context of interaction with other cultures. The ultimate goal of JITLI is to create a partnership between the communities of San Diego, Sha’ar HaNegev, Segev Shalom and Lakiya. JITLI aims to break down stereotypes and build lasting relationships leading to a vibrant and meaningful co-existence.

JITLI offers the opportunity for the participants to appreciate their similarities, acknowledge their differences and understand each other’s cultures. JITLI impacts the lives of the young participants forever, imbuing them with the knowledge, the tools and the will to affect their own futures and those of their peers and communities. The trip is a two-week trip to Israel that includes visits to a number of cultural and historical landmarks.

  • About the Program

Studies have shown that cultural gaps between Jewish Israelis and Diaspora Jews are larger than ever and continue to grow with every new generation. There is evidence of fear, apathy, lack of connection and understanding between the groups, and even a negative sentiment towards the political situation in Israel. JITLI aims to close that gap through peer-to-peer meetings and mutual understanding.

  • Participant Stories from the Field

JITLI offers the opportunity for the participants to appreciate their similarities, acknowledge their differences and understand each other’s cultures. This trip will forever impact the lives of the young participants, imbuing them with the knowledge, the tools and the will to affect their own futures and those of their peers and communities.

The JITLI program engages Jewish American, Jewish Israeli, Arab Israeli, and Palestinian high school students who are entering their senior year in a series of multicultural seminars, dialogues, simulation games, performances, presentations, and encounters with experts in relevant fields. This experience enriches all participants, and allows for more meaningful understanding.
