Sha’ar HaNegev Delegations: A Journey of Connection and Renewal

By Moy Arbitman, Director, Israel & Global Peoplehood

Jewish Federation of San Diego recently welcomed two delegations from our sister region in Israel, consisting of Social Workers and Young Adults. For over 25 years, we have maintained a profound and impactful partnership with the region of Sha’ar HaNegev, which is located along the Gaza border and was at the brunt of the horrific terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023.

These delegations were more than a gesture of friendship; they demonstrated the strength and depth of our long-standing partnership. Our connection has always been about mutual support and shared values, but this year, the context was profoundly different due to the events of October 7 and the ongoing conflict with Hamas.

These visits offered moments of healing, reflection, and hope during a time of great adversity.

A Purpose-Driven Visit

For the Young Adults, the trip was an opportunity to immerse themselves in San Diego's vibrant culture and landscape while finding a respite from the relentless stress of war. They explored iconic sites like the San Diego Zoo, enjoyed a SEAL Tour with stunning views of the San Diego skyline, and rode nearly every attraction at the San Diego County Fair. These activities provided a temporary escape from the constant stress and tension they face back home, offering them a safe space to experience joy and relaxation. They also had the chance to connect with peers and form new friendships, which added an invaluable sense of community and support.

The Social Workers' visit was particularly touching. Since October 7, these dedicated professionals have been on the front lines, providing crucial support to children, families, and communities shattered by the attacks. Despite the immense demand for psychological support services in Israel, which has surged by over 700%, and the evacuation of some of their own staff, they have continued their vital work. Their trip to San Diego was designed as a well-deserved respite—a chance to step away from their demanding roles and focus on self-care. It was more than just a break; it was an intentional effort to offer them space for reflection, rejuvenation, and professional growth. Through equine therapy at Katy’s Farm and the Rosie Project SD, participating in sound baths and healing sessions, Jewish yoga and mindfulness activities by the ocean, journaling and much more, the visit was tailored to foster relaxation and renewal.

Moments of Connection

The Young Adults’ journey was marked by memorable experiences and meaningful connections. Their visit began with a warm welcome at the Lawrence Family JCC | JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS and a lively bonfire at Mission Bay Beach with IAC San Diego, where they connected with the local young Israeli community. Over the following days, they explored downtown San Diego, attended a Padres game, and were even featured on the billboard. “I couldn’t believe how nice everyone was to us, and our name up there? That’s a highlight for sure,” shared one participant. Everywhere they went, they were embraced, even by random fans at the Padres game who saw Jewish stars on their hats, heard them speaking Hebrew, and shouted their support.

The trip also allowed the Young Adults to build connections with local Jewish organizations and gain a broader understanding of life in San Diego. They enjoyed a tour of Coastal Roots Farm and were hosted at The Hive by the Leichtag Foundation. During their visit to the Farm, it was evident how much they appreciated the environment, which offered them a chance to feel at home, let go, and feel present.

A particularly touching moment occurred during Shabbat Services at Congregation Beth Israel. Participants were moved by the unity and support of the community. “I felt the love and warmth radiating into my body, it made me cry,” one participant shared. During a home hosted dinner at Federation Campaign Co-Chair Sonia Israel’s home, another noted, “Being around children at Sonia’s made me feel pure happiness and joy. It allowed me to come out of my comfort zone and share a smile with children again.” For many, this trip allowed them to reconnect with a sense of joy they had lost.

Their time with the Rosie Project SD was particularly impactful. They experienced walking around with the animals, engaging with the horses, and having a sound bath while the horses walked around them. This helped them ground themselves and feel present. They also enjoyed journaling and reflection activities throughout the trip, which provided moments of relaxation and inner peace. “I genuinely feel like I have been able to disconnect. This trip has shown me how welcoming San Diego is and just how amazing our partnership truly is. I’ll definitely be back,” shared one Social Worker.

In the days that followed, the Social Workers engaged deeply with the local community. During their visit to Jewish Family Service of San Diego and its Center for Jewish Care, the group was moved by the support and care that exists in San Diego for both Jews and non-Jews alike. They were shown the wide array of services provided and saw firsthand how our community comes together to support those in need, providing valuable insights and ideas that could be implemented back home.

Midway through the trip, the group reached a significant turning point. By then, they had grown comfortable with each other, setting the stage for deeper processing of their experiences. Federation arranged a dedicated day for the Social Workers to meet privately with local mental health professionals, both in group and individual settings. This provided a crucial outlet for them to discuss their experiences during the attack. The change was palpable as they emerged from these sessions visibly lighter and more at ease. One Social Worker noted, "I finally got to talk about it. I didn’t know if I would ever have the chance to."

With a newfound sense of relief, both groups were ready to embrace joyful activities. For the Young Adults, one of the highlights was kayaking at La Jolla Cove. The experience provided a perfect mix of adventure and tranquility, allowing them to bond while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the stunning cove.

Meanwhile, the Social Workers were invited to "Spice it Up with Deb: A Live Cooking Experience," led by Federation Board Member Debbie Kornberg. Initially, there was some hesitation about accommodating everyone's tastes, but Debbie quickly put those concerns to rest. The group enthusiastically crafted delicious salads, risottos, and a variety of vegetarian and fish dishes. Debbie provided the recipes in both English and Hebrew, ensuring they could recreate these meals at home. The cooking session turned into a delightful bonding experience, filled with laughter and delicious food.

Building Resilience and Moving Forward

These visits underscored the power of our ongoing partnership and the vital role we play in fostering healing and resilience for our brothers and sisters in Israel. When we asked each delegation how we could continue to support them, their responses were simple yet profound: more people-to-people connections, more friendships, more visits, and more shared safe moments. Knowing that we are here, that we care, and that we are one family has provided comfort for their souls. “We now feel as though we always have a home in San Diego,” one Social Worker said.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to strengthening the ties between San Diego and Sha’ar HaNegev. These delegations have demonstrated that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, the spirit of resilience and connection can prevail. As one participant from the Young Adult delegation noted, “I take back unity and how much we are all connected. As I look to the future, I know we will come back stronger. This delegation is a tiny example of how much we want our community back. This trip has given me the power and confidence to move things and make them happen.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the San Diego community for your warm hospitality and enthusiastic participation. Your support makes these exchanges possible and continues to strengthen the bonds that unite our communities. Together, we can continue to foster impactful relationships and create lasting change.
